Literacy is a Right for All Children

WAKE Up and Read is a community coalition made up of 30+ committed organizations working together toward one common goal — improving childhood literacy.

Thank you for helping build inclusive home libraries for more than 10,000 children in Wake County this year!

We have 131,397 books on our way to 200K! Building and expanding home libraries is one way we are addressing the opportunities for learning lost as a result of the pandemic.

Our 9th Annual Book Drive Kicks Off January 29th and runs through February.

You can still check it out on Facebook! There are read alouds, performances, and information about programs in our community that support literacy. Our mascot, Ruben the Rooster, along with his friends will be visiting our community partners to talk about this year’s book drive and how people can join!

Raising readers takes a village...

Why I Volunteer at WAKE Up and Read

I want to see our children succeed in life, and reading is a critical skill in achieving that success. Physical books that a child can touch, keep, and own help make reading enjoyable and personal. Being able to be a part of the process that places that book into a child’s hands is rewarding. Plus, the staff of WAKE Up and Read are solid and down-to-earth, my fellow volunteers are fun to “work” with (it’s not really work), and the snacks are abundant, varied, and tasty!
