WAKE Up and Read is a community coalition made up of 30+ committed organizations working together toward one common goal — improving childhood literacy.
The pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges for children and families with many opportunities for learning lost. This is why we have set our most ambitious goal ever. Let’s work together to collect 200,000 new and gently read books for children in Wake County.
You can still check it out on Facebook! There are read alouds, performances, and information about programs in our community that support literacy. Our mascot, Ruben the Rooster, along with his friends will be visiting our community partners to talk about this year’s book drive and how people can join!
I want to see our children succeed in life, and reading is a critical skill in achieving that success. Physical books that a child can touch, keep, and own help make reading enjoyable and personal. Being able to be a part of the process that places that book into a child’s hands is rewarding. Plus, the staff of WAKE Up and Read are solid and down-to-earth, my fellow volunteers are fun to “work” with (it’s not really work), and the snacks are abundant, varied, and tasty!
